Thanks to big companies like WeWork and The Wing, coworking is a hot topic and most everyone who’s online knows a bit about it. Coworking combines community and work; different people working under the same roof, using the same resources, for different companies. But why is it so popular? 

The nature of work is changing, meaning the places we work need to adapt. Coworking offers a new way of approaching the work day, one that is often stress free, collaborative, and productive. The gig-economy is growing, meaning there is (and will continue to be) an influx of freelance and remote workers needing professional spaces to work. 

Coworking allows for a greater freedom for freelancers, remote workers, and professionals alike. Working independently has its challenges, but coworking eliminates the need to be tied to a specific space or the distractions that come with working from home. What’s more, many coworking companies offer memberships that allow you to work at a multitude of different offices in different locations. 

Coworking spaces are often focused heavily on sustainability. Coworking saves resources and is vastly more sustainable than the traditional office set-up. By coworking, we save electricity, produce less waste, and communally work toward being more environmentally conscious. Sharing resources like paper supplies, eliminating single use plastic are just some of the ways that coworking spaces promote more sustainable work-life practices. 

One of the most valuable gifts coworking can give to individuals is work-life balance. Coworking provides a professional environment and, in many cases, private space to get work done during the day, but sets you free when the day is over. In a coworking space, there is no pressure to stay extra hours just to show face in the office. And, because many of these spaces are designed to promote productivity and eliminate distractions, you end up getting more work done in less time, meaning you don’t need to stay late to finish projects.
